Description: Williams Defender came out in 1980, 60,000 games were made. This game is still one of the fastest paced games ever. When it came out people thought that it was no possible to pass 70k, later folks would be turning the game over. This is Red version MAME its on a tougher setting than most arcades would set it at. After 100k if you hang around for for over 10-20 secconds and waist time its not uncommon to get 5+ vaders on the screen. This is using the original panel with a Hagstrom keyboard emulator module. It plays like the original. This was a decent set for me but started getting tired, score was over 250k but video got to long so I capped it at 100k. For those of you who write you can turn it over, I could could to on standard settings, but MAME Red setting or rather "White Label" is nasty, pretty sure I could turn over this too given some time to get back in the swing of things. stevebasset ::: Favorites Thanks for posting that. Defender is still THE BEST video arcade machine ever! I remember seeing one back in 1981 and what I remember is the low noise (engine) rumble. noceur ::: Favorites I use MAME all the time on an older Mac. I always configure it like so: TAB = UP SHIFT = DOWN THRUST = . (keypad) FIRE = ENTER (keypad) SMART BOMB = 0 (keypad) HYPERSPACE = SPACE BAR This is the ONLY way I can play using MAME with a keyboard, it takes a little getting used to but works well for me who only remembers the original layout of the control panel. 07-08-30 22:24:38 __________________________________________________
zwabu ::: Favorites Terrablader do you or anyone here know the most "realistic" way to configure keyboard/mouse buttons for Defender that make it somewhat realistic for MAME? pookie67 ::: Favorites i haven't seen a Defender machine around in probably 10 years or more, i recall last time i played i was rusty. In my early 80's prime i probably could have turned it over even on red settings, but maybe not. The game is brutal, it takes lightning reflexes, and there was no player better than me in the heyday. pookie67 ::: Favorites did i ever mention i was 2nd place state champ (in 1981) at this? This was my game, was obsessed with it the moment i first saw one in early 1980 and played it religiously. Could play forever on one quarter, turning it over endlessly, but of course the trick was getting 999,975 in that last 10,000 point stretch of free men every hit.
