Part 3: We don't go to God alone, but with other people. Life in a Benedictine community is truly a life lived in common, and as the Rule ... all » of Benedict says, "Prefer nothing whatever to Christ, and may He bring us all together to everlasting life." (RB 72:11) We Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual ... all » Adoration are a contemporary monastic community living according to the Rule of Benedict. We serve the Church through a ministry of prayer and a dedication to the Eucharist. We strive to witness to God's presence in our world through our community life and by offering a welcoming space for silence, prayer, and spiritual hospitality in a shared environment of monastic peace. Every day, every moment in the monastery is an opportunity to respond to God's love. In our community life we find happiness in our relationship to God, serving each other and praying for those in need. Our daily life revolves around the Liturgy of the Hours (praying and singing the psalms) and celebrating the Eucharist. Lectio Divina, reflecton on the Word of God, is our lifeblood. We are washed with the Word every day. We meditate on the Word. Little by little we become the Word. Our work supports our life of prayer, whether is be making altar bread, welcoming visitors, responding to prayer requests, making soap and candles, playing music, cooking or gardening. In October, 2005 Father Robert Scullin, SJ released a CD entitled "And It's So Clear." As part of the release, I was invited to perform with the group. The acoustics at the church were really not very good at all, but the song is very pretty and I like the tin whistle interlude.

It's a shame there was no harp in the song, that would have been wonderful! Beautiful, though. There should be an ethereal whistle interlude in every song. Perhaps in heaven...

Very pleasant; the bent notes add a certain 'verve' to the performance. ;) I only dabble at the pennywhistle, but your performance makes me rethink my approach (I have some nice 'Clarke' instruments that are sadly neglected). (I play a number of hornpipes & reels, including this one on the panpipes, even though they aren't terribly idiomatic for the instrument.)

Hey Rudy and Casey! Perhaps this isn't the best place to put this, but I was wondering how I should receive comics. I'm just now getting into the whole comic scene, and up till now I've just been picking up the classics in anthologies at bookstores. But if I want to get a new release, I have to go to this horrible comic store that is completely out of the way. Is there a better way?

Hey, love the series! I'm not too well read when it comes to comics beyond a couple series that I really like, but this is a great way to get exposed. I have to say though, and it's probably just because I love Ashley Wood's stuff, I don't feel like his art is a detriment to the comic at all. Really enhances it, I think.

Very well done, Ryan... I think it's important for people to understand that the majority of traditional music was used for dancing and as an expression of a supressed culture, so understanding the culture and the styles of dance has the potential to give great insight on playing the rythyms and understanding the flow of the melodies. I love how you're starting to introduce that concept with a dance polka.

Hey Ryan a have a small question for you....um does it matter if sometimes I play the high D during the song with all of my fingers on the holes, in stead of only the last five? I found myself doing it quite often, but I didnt' know if it made a difference in how the song sounded. Thanks a lot Ryan, I'm really enjoying perfecting this song.

Well, although I´m not Ryan, I´ll add my two cents here. On cheaper whistles, it doesn´t matter really much - on better ones, especially those with backpressure, full-fingered high D sounds blunt and not so appealing.

Description:

Fordham University presents week 2 of Introduction to the Tin Whistle with Ryan Duns, SJ. Tune: Dawning of the Day. The notes for the tune can be found here: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/1441 This IS NOT the best transcription -- whistle players can't play that low C note. Just pretend that the low C (the note beneath the low D) is a D. This will give you a chance to work on both reading and listening.

Would it be possible to have a tabulation on screen indicating what key to play, therefore, making it easier to practce the notes. Your fingers are fast Ryan, even when you play at pedestrian speed. YEAH! "Jumpy and unclear art" pretty much sums it all up with today's comics! You go C.O.! Time for a comic book Renaissance. Or to paraphrase the Joker, "This industry needs an enema!"

I'd be remiss if I didn't try to post at least one tune this week! Here's a common hornpipe I recorded with one take. I make some silly faces during the tune, but I suspect you'll forgive me. I wish I could find my other whistle...

Harvest Home is a nice tune to play before going into this one. Wonderful as always -- also, congrats on your C&F nomination of best YouTube whistler. ;p

They usually come after a LONG time! It's not usually a conscious effort...most variations seem to come about from mistakes!
