Description:

In 1977, Steven Spielberg first released his classic science fiction film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and it was a huge financial success. Three years later, he released a new "special edition" to theatres that added several sequences (including a much ballyhood look "inside" the spaceship) and dropped a few out. One of the scenes that was dropped is this funny UFO press conference sequence, with the film's main characters in attendance. It was one of my favorite scenes from the original film, and I was irritated that it had been dropped. The scene is only available in original theatrical cuts of the film, and as a "bonus scene" in the 3-disc Criterion laserdisc release from the 80s. It has never been included on any of the DVD releases. It remains to be seen whether they will include it on the upcoming 3rd DVD release of the film. I think a reason that it might have been taken out of the film (and not used as a "deleted scene" in DVD releases) could be due to a major goof at the end of the scene: as Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) sketches a vague vision of the Devil's Tower on a newspaper with a pencil, the headline talks about a "cosmic kidnaping", and I believe that the word has two "p" in it, not one. This glaring error made it thru to the final theatrical cut, and perhaps Spielberg was embarrassed about it. (Nowadays it could surely be digitally corrected, if that's the reason). Whatever the reason for burying it, this is a great scene that deserves to be rediscovered in the next DVD edition.

I've never understood why Roberts Blossom's great line "they can fly rings around the moon, but yeeears ahead of 'em on the highway" was cut when they released the special edition. It's one thing to add scenes, but cutting things out can be quite annoying for an audience already acquainted with the material.
