cziffra1980's comment is on the money. being familiar with rachmaninoff's own recording, this is very idiomatic of SVR's playing and tempo with Fiorentino also transcribing the orchestral part into his version. listen to his comment that this piece played by himself (ie SVR) it is quite different to how it is played today.

il maestro fiorentino è magico! vero musicista e pianista puro a pari livello di michelangeli e horowitz, i quali l'ho hanno apprezzato e ammirato! grandissimo!

It was of this variation that Rachmaninoff is said to have sarcastically remarked: "This one is for the publishers."

Tempo? Maybe he was using "rubato"? I think he plays it fantastically.

What a rush. Geez, I've never heard someone plays the 18th variation like this. Sorry to admit, the tempo was totally wrong.

Played by who? I haven't listened to Rachmaninoff play it in a while, but I don't recall it being much different. Fiorentino knew his stuff and did his research. You've probably heard it played too slow. This is very stylistically appropriate Rachmaninoff playing, unlike the crap you hear these days.
